It’s all in the brushing!

I had to buy a new toothbrush this week and, before I did, I decided that a little research might be a good idea. For one thing should I buy electric or manual? There are differing views on which is best but according to the NHS (and I trust them) both are equally good, as long as you brush all the surfaces of all your teeth and use a fluoride toothpaste.

So as electric tooth brushes contain batteries, use electric to re-charge and are made mainly of plastic then it’s a manual brush for me.

Of course this led me to how to brush your teeth for the best effect and I was happy to discover that my brushing routine is pretty much on the money. However, one thing I’ve always worried about is rinsing your mouth immediately after brushing as it must wash away the fluoride in the toothpaste (not sure I couldn’t rinse anyway) and it appears that you shouldn’t. It’s the same with using a mouthwash; it needs to be at a different time of day to when you brush your teeth (after lunch?).

Brushing your teeth twice every day is best and one of these occasions should be just before bed. You should brush for two minutes and not too hard. And something you shouldn’t do is brush right after eating; instead wait at least an hour.

Finally, don’t keep your tooth brush too long; you should change your toothbrush every three to four months. Which brings be back to my new brush.

Okay, so it’s not going to be electric. But here at iYFA we are fighting the war on plastic and most toothbrushes are made of plastic, so what else is there?

Well it seems the answer is Bamboo and there are a great many brushes to choose from. They are eco-friendly, biodegradable and will reduce the amount of plastic ending up in landfill. I also found one manufacturer who gives 1% of their profits to charities that are committed to removing plastic waste from our oceans.

So please join me and get yourself a lovely Bamboo toothbrush.
