The inconvenience factor!

I’m off on holiday in a few weeks to Italy, stopping in Genoa to visit one of my favourite restaurants en route to the Italian coast, where we are staying in Rapallo.

The reason I bring this up is because our flight is at some unearthly hour of the morning and pretty inconvenient. But I love visiting Italy so I’m happy to put up with the inconvenience. And this got me thinking about other inconveniences in my life, some very small and some larger. One of these is the glass milk bottle and the In Your Face Marketing’s (iYFA) war on plastic.

Now I have to say that this is a very small inconvenience, to me, but could have a massive effect on the use of plastic if more people did what our family does. The trouble is it’s a little inconvenient and I’ll explain why.

Supermarket milk comes in two and four pint bottles, they are always chilled, you can stack them flat and reseal them once opened. While the milk we get comes in a glass milk bottle, only by the pint, it’s not always chilled, you can’t stack them and, once opened, they are opened and all you are left with is a torn foil cap; so on the whole pretty inconvenient.

But we are prepared to put up with this, like our flight time, because we want the world to have less plastic to recycle and ending up in our seas.

I guess my point is that if we are to help protect our planet sometimes we are going to have to accept being inconvenienced. Sometimes this will be in very small ways and sometimes in much larger ways.

So, what could you do, that you aren’t currently doing, that although it would be inconvenient, you are prepared to do to help the environment? Even if it is only a little thing everything done, however small, will help our future.

Please do let me know what it is.
